A Catholic school has banned cussing-- but only for its female students.
I wonder if they must sit behind a divider at daily Mass and walk a few paces behind the boys?
Seriously, this is such a weird story I don't know where to begin. We (Christians) don't do this kind of thing. If cussing is a sin (and I maintain that it is NOT), then it's a sin for both males and females. And if this is some kind of cultural thing, I'm thinking they are pursuing the wrong sort of culture.
We children of God know that there is "no male or female, no slave or free" in Jesus.
This sort of thing is a damn shame, and it makes all of us look bad.
Pax et bonum
The article makes it seems like the ladies were acting out of their own convictions. It was not a blanket policy imposed on them. And it's only a 30 day "fast".
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with people trying to become more aware of the image they project and taking steps towards that goal?
Hi Bob, the article says that it was done by a teacher (and principal) and that participation wasn't voluntary.
DeleteYeah, it does. But seriously, aren't there more significant things to get up in arms about? This one really wasn't up to the caliber of the thought-provoking stuff you normally post.
DeleteI'm sure there are. This just struck me particularly. I'm dealing with quite a lot personally and I haven't really been on my game lately. Sorry, Bob.
DeleteSadly, I would point out that this specific example is less about the Church's phallogocentric fixation than with modern society and it's pigeon-holing of women into the 'Madonna/whore dichotomy'. In short, girls need to act like Novices or Oblates, and if they don't, they're one step away from being prostitutes. Thus, for the same behaviour, "Boys will be boys" but a girl "is asking for it."
ReplyDelete"We (christians) don't do this kind of thing."
Ummm....Do what, Thom? Tell women that they are second-class citizens whose job it is to have children and obey the man of the house (whether it be the house of God or mankind)? Are you saying that churches don't restrict positions of authority and power to the penile-equipped? Or that they don't lay down additional/different sets of rules for women than for men? My experience in the South and in evangelical protestant churches says that they do and I have a church filled with ex-Roman Catholic women who would bend your ear for hours about how it happened in the RC church, too.
Mind you, none of this dulls the point of your outrage. Christians _should_ know better. We, as children of God, _do_ know better.
When I said that Christians don't do this kind of thing, I meant it as an ideal-- like, "Christians shouldn't do this kind of thing."
DeleteThere's a reason why there different set of rules for boys and girls. And there reason is.. we're different, no matter what you think or say.
DeleteBut it's even funnier when a gay man complains about phallogocentric fixation, or restricting power to only those penile-equipped. And, why are you so worried about those vagina-equipped? Is it because of your bizzare vagina-centric fixation?
You really made my day, Tim. ;-)
Under Christ, we are neither male nor female, but all equal (Gal. 3, Col.3, 1 Cor 12). Didn't say that we were the same, but equal.
DeleteA gay man? My fiancee would heartily disagree. I will agree with you that I do worry, for I want my son to grow up in a world where discrimination of ANY kind is wrong and people may fulfill their potential and not be barred from it due to race, creed, colour, gender, orientation, age or gender identity.
Tim, you're onto something with the Madonna/Whore dichotomy. The sad end of that is when a woman doesn't act in such narrowly defined terms (that of the "lady"), she suddenly "deserves" the harassment and abuse heaped on her for stepping out of line. What's even worse is that those consciously (or unconsciously) defending rape culture inherent in such a system are those who'd also strenuously object to the overt sexuality of our time.
DeleteYou're absolutely right. And this isn't a sin issue: it's a cultural, gender, patriarchal, dominance issue.
DeleteCussing might be viewed as a sinful, even though I'm not sure about its sinfulness. It's probably more a matter of aesthetics, but I don't see that as any excuse of cussing. I simply don't buy it.
DeleteWhat you, Tim, and others love to quote means only that we are equal before God as children of God. That's all and you can't infer anything else beyond this.
This so-called culture of rape is a combination of male sexual hunger and feminism worshiping, more or less, femininity. Match made in heaven if you ask me.
There's nothing wrong with discrimination in itself as you, and I, and everyone else do it on daily basis. And you omit the fact that there reasons why such forms of discrimination exists - probably because you're blinded by your own ideology.
Madonna/whore dichotomy? Fine, let me give an example why it's a better approach than yours, OK? When a guy sleeps around with many women, he might end up with STIs. When a girl sleeps with many men, she might end up with STIs as well, but what's even more important, she might get pregnant. So, who is more burdened, Tim?
